Did you graduate from a reputable college and wish to become an IGCSE teacher? Then this article is for you.
IGCSE is the acronym for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education. It was developed by the Cambridge International Examinations in 1988 and is the world’s most popular international certification for end of secondary school (also known as O-Level or fifth form or year 11 in respective countries and schools). This certification comes before one proceeds to Advanced Level (A-Level or sixth form or year 12&13) or pre-university studies.
IGCSE is currently available in private international schools and independent schools in over 120 countries. And the certificate is recognized by all major universities and colleges. It also satisfies the entry requirement of institutions and universities in many countries. IGCSE offers more than 70 subjects. But students are required to take a minimum of 5 or a maximum of 14 subjects.
The core subjects are First Language, Second Language, Mathematics, and Sciences (Physics, Biology, Chemistry). Students can also choose other subjects ranging from Social Sciences (commonly Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Sociology) to Arts & Technology (commonly Computer Studies, Information & Communication Technology (ICT), Art & Design). But the number of subjects that need to be taken varies from school to school, and also depends on individual preference.
A lot of schools are gradually shifting their curriculum to suit the requirements of the IGCSE board. This education system is internationally designed and accepted. This means that whether you are a teacher or a student, you will gain from this syllabus.
Becoming an IGCSE Teacher
- Acquire basic education
You must have acquired basic education before thinking of becoming an IGCSE teacher. Your graduation should either be centered on that subject to which you want to teach as an IGCSE teacher or it should be a major subject that is related to the subject that you wish to teach. For example, if you want to teach English, then you should either be a graduate of English Language or another course where English Literature is one of the major subjects. Similarly, if you wish to teach Chemistry, then you should have a degree in Chemistry or Industrial Chemistry, and so on.

Becoming an IGCSE teacher
- Get familiar with ICT
The schools following the IGCSE syllabus promote information and communication technology or ICT. Irrespective of your subject of expertise, you will be required to conduct classes virtually or solve assignments on digital boards. So, you should learn such technologies on your own and improve your proficiency in the tech domain.
Becoming an IGCSE teacher requires you to keep yourself updated with the latest technologies available in the market. The IGCSE schools take high fees from the students, and part of it is used to improve their infrastructure to suit the modern requirements. Therefore, you must equip yourself with the knowledge to use the latest infrastructure provided by the school.
-
Experience
This is one of the easiest ways to become an IGCSE teacher. If you want to become a teacher in an IGCSE school, then you should first teach in some other schools on the subject of your choice. If you wish to teach at the secondary level, then an experience of 3 years is generally acceptable to qualify you for the interview.
However, if you wish to teach the students at higher levels, then a minimum of five years of experience in your subject of expertise is required. Besides, you can ask the head of your previous school to write a detailed recommendation letter about your teaching prowess. The letter should highlight your abilities as a teacher and your readiness to learn new things in the system.
- Be proficient in the English Language.
Your mode of communication must be in the English Language, and those who have studied in an English medium school right from the beginning will be in a more advantageous position in the interview. As part of the interview, some IGCSE schools provide applicants with students in a classroom and ask them (individually) to teach these students on their subject of expertise. Therefore, you will have to improve your communication skills and practice teaching your subject in the English Language at home.
If you are a student and wish to become an IGCSE teacher, going to an IGCSE school is also an added advantage. You will learn the syllabus properly there and get accustomed to the curriculum before coming into the profession – being an IGCSE teacher.
